American Airlines: How to de-ice planes in bad weather
If anyone has ever flew somewhere really cold then it is a weird experience when the plane encounters de-icing.... Only time I've experienced it was at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.

American and US Airways Merger Likely
It has been announced that the 4th (American) and 5th (US Airways) largest airlines in North America are looking at a possible merger which would create the biggest airline in the US and indeed the world, knocking Delta off its perch.
American Airlines transported some 107 million passengers in 2012, whereas US Airways had 57 million (of which myself and my school were customers on our October break Maths & Science vacation to Orlando, Florida!). Delta are number one with 152 million passengers.
American Airlines main hub is Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas whereas US Airways is Charlotte/Douglas in North Carolina. So it remains to be seen if they would divide into two geographical spheres of influence much as the way Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud perform for the German grocer.
This could be a massive boost for the new airline as they will have an incredible reach and competitive firepower, though they will naturally have to see where they cannibalise each other. And it is estimated that when a merger takes place of such a size there can be errors and mistakes in bookings. It has been said that it could take 2 years for it to all get smoothed over.
The merger has came about due to PESTEC factors such as the global recession and increased fuel prices – which is an airlines main expenditure.
The new airline could have an impressive fleet of 1,500 planes at their disposal and some 120,000 employees.
American Airlines parent company AMR filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the end of November and AA hope to come out as a stand alone company, but that is now looking ever more remote.

FAULTY SEATS GROUND AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHTS
American Airlines has cancelled 94 flights as it works to fix passenger seats that could come loose.
The move comes after a flight from Boston to Miami had to make an emergency landing last weekend after a block of three seats disconnected from the floor.
American said the problem affected 48 Boeing 757s, and that it hoped to have them back in service by Saturday.
The faulty seats had recently been refurbished. The Federal Aviation Administration is now continuing to investigate the issue.
ELECTRIC CARS "A POLLUTER"
Electric cars might pollute much more than petrol or diesel-powered cars, according to new research.
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology study found greenhouse gas emissions rose dramatically if coal was used to produce the electricity.
Electric car factories also emitted more toxic waste than conventional car factories, their report in the Journal of Industrial Energy said.
SAMSUNG BOAST RECORD PROFITS
Samsung Electronics has estimated record profits in the three months to September, led by strong sales of its Galaxy smartphones.
The South Korean company said it expects operating profits of 8.1 trillion won ($7.3bn; £4.5bn), nearly double last year's figure.
The estimates beat analyst expectations sending Samsung shares 1.5% higher. However, ongoing legal tussles with Apple have cast a shadow over its future performance.
MP3 RULING IMMINENT
A US court is to consider a case that could determine whether digital media files can be resold.
One-year-old start-up ReDigi is battling music giant EMI over whether digital music can be retraded after it has been legally purchased.
ReDigi says that its software is designed to comply with existing United States copyright laws. But EMI argues a legal principle which allows consumers to resell purchased material goods does not apply.
INDIA AIRLINE GROUNDED
India's Kingfisher airline has grounded its fleet for a further week after talks with workers protesting against months of unpaid wages failed.
On Monday the cash-strapped airline had to suspend flights for three days after some technical staff went on strike. But late on Thursday it said flights would be grounded until 12 October.
Meanwhile, the wife of a Kingfisher employee has killed herself, leaving a note blaming financial stress because her husband's salary had not been paid.

American Airlines' Parent Firm in Bankruptcy measures
American Airlines' parent company AMR Corporation has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Shares in the airline plunged 85% when they resumed trading on Tuesday. They are now worth 25 cents each.
The company expects the airline to continue to operate as normal throughout the bankruptcy process.
Speculation about AMR's financial position surfaced in recent weeks after cost-cutting negotiations failed.
AMR said agreements with its workforce forced it to spend $600m (£384m) more than other airlines on staff costs.
The airline employs 78,000 staff worldwide and operates out of five major US hubs.
