Indra Nooyi was born in Chennai (old Madras) in India in 1955. She became a product manager with Johnson & Johnson from which she went to Yale and did a Masters degree in Public and Private management.
Indra Nooyi started with PepsiCo in 1994 and in 2001 she became the Chief Financial Officer and then in 2007 the Head Honco as CEO.
Under Nooyi's watch Pepsi net profits originally increased but due to more health initiatives some critics have argued they have taken their eye off of the soft drinks ball and in North America Pepsi's market share has dropped by 1% in 2011, falling behind their eternal foes, Coca Cola. Pepsi has now even fallen behind Diet Coke as well as Classic Coke.
Other commentators have mentioned the lack of TV and mass advertising which has possibly had an effect on market share. Pepsi have spent a great deal more recently but we are yet to see the final outcomes.
Fortune magazine has ranked Indra Nooyi as the most powerful businesswoman in the world from 2006 - 10 consecutively.
So even though Indra Nooyi has been an incredible success story, she seems to have some issues to work out at Pepsi just now, but as history tells us, it is one of the hardest jobs in the Business world to try to overtake Coca Cola.
