Prelim Study Tips

Obviously I want my students to try their best for my own exam, however I know that is not always possible. What I would say is follow these tips:

Make a plan/timetable of your study for all subjects – don’t leave it until a few days or the night before an exam.

Study in short chunks. I used to study in 40 minute blocks with a 20 minute break.

;Drink lots of water – this helps concentration.

Use different coloured pens when re-writing notes

t;Summarise your lecture notes into your own notes

t;Summarise your own notes into mindmaps or some form of shorthand

;Attempt past paper questions – don’t use the solutions unless you are really stuck – then see how you did

Try the difficult questions – attempt topics or questions you don’t know that well – by re-doing ones you are good at you are only kidding yourself on. You need to make sure you can answer a broad range of questions.

;Create a bank of quiz questions on topics/subjects – then get someone at home to quiz you in the evening for 20 minutes – flashcards are useful.
