Toyota set to go back to number one in the car industry

Product recalls, halt in production, questionable quality. Phrases that five years ago you would never had said of Toyota. Toyota are always held up as being more reliable than Volvo and with a superb standard of quality, meaning value for customers.

But all of the above did happen, though to be fair to Toyota they had little say in the March Earthquake/Tsunami/Fukushima crisis which severely damaged their production and distribution. Toyota responded well to the various product recalls by offering long term quality guarantees.

So with that in mind perhaps it is or it isn’t a shock that Toyota look set to reclaim the title of world's biggest carmaker in 2012, from being third 2011.

2012 Sales are up by 22% adding up to a staggering 9.7 million vehicles. 8.68 million of those sales come from Toyota and Lexus.

In 2011, Toyota lost the top spot to General Motors of the US with Germany's Volkswagen coming second, after Japan's tsunami and earthquake, as well as flooding in Thailand, hit production. Toyota had previously held the crown for the world's biggest maker and seller of cars in three consecutive years, from 2008 to 2010.

Personally I have only driven Toyota’s twice. Once in Australia and once in New Zealand. The cars were comfortable and had excellent fuel economy. My only gripe with Toyota is that the affordable sportscar the Celica is no longer being made. That was a beautiful car!
