The Aldi Group are divided into Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi (Süd) South. Both are run independently. The reason goes back to one of the co-founders, Karl Albrecht, refusing to sell cigarettes.
Incredibly, it was not on health grounds, but his belief that cigarettes attracted thieves!
