Global Cities - Chengdu: Facts

With British Airways looking to have new flights to Chengdu, I thought I would look at some interesting facts about a city of which I have to admit I didn’t really know until I went to Memphis Zoo in 2010 and saw their pandas who are loaned from Chengdu.

Chengdu seems to be a hidden city that only now is starting to become as well known as other Chinese cities.

Chengdu is the provincial capital of southwest China's Sichuan province.

Sichuan is the largest of all provinces in China with a population of more than 100 million.

Sichuan province is the size of Brazil.

Chengdu has a population of over 14 million people.

The world’s first ever paper currency was used in Chengdu around 420-479 AD.

20% of the world’s computers are made in Chengdu.

70% of all iPads are made and shipped from Chengdu.

Over 215 of the Fortune 500 companies have a presence in Chengdu.

Chengdu has the largest number of teahouses in the world.
