Here is a little look at location as a factor in Business.
GLENEAGLES HOTEL
Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire is probably Scotland’s most famous hotel. Rooms are charged at around £500 per night and has a championship golf course. It also hosted the G8 summit in 2005, attended by World Leaders such as President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Why do you think the owners can charge such high prices?
PTARMIGAN RESTAURANT
The restaurant is at the summit of Cairngorm Mountain. During the summer tourists flock here to see the spectacular views. In winter the skiers use it as a base for skiing.
What are the main advantages for the Ptarmigan?
LINWOOD: THE PHOENIX
Linwood was once one of the largest car manufacture areas in Europe, when it made the Hilman Imp. When the factories closed down in the 1970s thousands of jobs were lost.
Strathclyde Region (as it was then) and the Scottish Development Agency invested millions to regenerate the area to attract Asda, Showcase Cinemas, McDonald’s and the other businesses. A place once famous for making cars is now home to many car dealerships such as Phoenix Honda and Arnold Clark.
And here we have one famous non-Scottish location for an industry.
SILICON VALLEY
Silicon Valley is in California and is the world’s capital for electronics firms. It appeared in the James Bond film “A View to a Kill” where the bad guy, Max Zorin, planned to flood the valley so he could dominate the world’s supply.
Why do you think this benefits all the major firms who work in electronics to house them all here?
